Basic Dog Training Commands 'Sit' - How do I Start Training when my Puppy Gets Over Excited?

How to use basic dog training commands (Sit) with an over excited puppy.

When trying to start training our 3 month puppy, he won't listen to anything because he knows there's a treat. I can't get him to stand still long enough to guide my hand above his head to teach 'sit' because he is jumping and wiggling all over to get the treat. How do I deal with this? Do I say No and stop the training/put the treat away?

Thanks!
Molly

That is so cute Molly - I mean really cute. This is so common and it reminds me of my Jack Russell Gertie. Your puppy is still a baby and very easily excited. I would use exercise as a method to get your puppy tired. Have a really good play and then a walk. Come back and try again. You can also put the treat away as soon as he gets too excited - get up and walk away - and then try again a little later. Try teaching the 'Sit' command after he has eaten as this will mean he is less likely to want to eat anymore (silly little tip bu you would be surprised how many people don't think of it). Keep practicing Molly as it is really early days and your puppy will get there he is still a baby after all. I would also advise puppy training classes as you all stand in a row with your puppy and practice together - this is invaluable not only for basic obedience training but also for socialization. Stick with it.

Hope this helps.
