Unfortunately the Boston Terrier are predisposed to specific diseases, this is due to a genetic vulnerability.

  • As you can see from the Boston Terrier pictures they have quite large ears, eyes and a short snub muzzle. Due to their protruding eyes they need to be checked regularly for any foreign objects including grass seeds.
  • Respiratory problems are often relatively common due to their short and snub like muzzles. Other breeds with a short snouted muzzle include Pugs and Shih Tzus - all of these breeds including Boston Terriers are called Brachycephalic breeds due to their short snout.
  • This breed are also quite susceptible to cold and hot temperatures as they really do not like cold or hot weather.
  • Due to their shout snout they are more prone to snoring and what is called a reverse sneeze - this is when they take a quick and repeated inhalation through their nose and then gagging and snorting to clear their palate of any mucus.
  • Boston terrier health problems also includes stomach gas and a build up of gas in their intestines.

Brachycephalic Syndrome
  • As previously mentioned this is a common problem where their short snub muzzle causes a resistance in airflow.
Ear Problems
  • Due to the fact that this breed has very erect ears they do have less  ear infections and yeast infection problems than dogs with drop ears. However this breed are more prone to sensorinneural deafness.
Patellar Luxation
  • This is when their is a rupture in the cruciate ligament, symptoms may include limping and of course pain.
Eye Problems

  1. Entropion
  2. Distichiasis
  3. Cherry Eye
  4. Corneal Ulcers
  5. Glaucoma
  6. Dry Eye also known as Keratitis Sicca
  7. Early and late onset of Cataracts
  8. Corneal Dystrophy
Hemivertebrae
  • Tail problems mat also occur due to their screw like tail, this is inherited and is more common in Brachycephalic breeds.

  • The red Boston Terrier is often referred to as liver in color but it can come in different shades of color.
  • The red color can come in very light shades to quite a dark red.
  • This variety are sometimes mistakingly called seal, but this is actually one of the traditional colors.
  • The AKC class the red variety as non-standard.
