Catahoula Leopard Hound Puppy Training

Is it a good idea to keep the Catahoula Leopard Hound puppy inside until it gets too big then make it stay outside or do we just keep it outside all the time? How do we start it out?

Thanks for your question and the first question we have ever recieved regarding the Catahoula Leopard Hound. We prefer to keep our dogs inside rather than outside mainly because dogs are social animals and need and like to be around the pack (it is natural for a dog to have a pack as they need a pack leader i.e. you to set boundaries and reinforce positive behavior and correct negative behavior). The problem with leaving dogs outside especially from a young age (as a puppy) means that you are not round to give the puppy the stimulation that he needs and craves. Keeping a puppy outside from a young age may also result in behavioral problems starting - mainly because you are not around to spot any anxiety related issues or behavior problems before they take root and become a problem as your dog gets older.

The Catahoula Leopard Hound (and I am not an expert) does not like to be isolated (they are family dogs) - they are very energetic, need regular walks and regular stimulation - they do not like to be left alone and need to be around people very regularly so being outside would not be the best for this breed.

If your Catahoula Leopard Hound is a male then they are a little more problematic than females but nothing regular socialization and obedience training won't be able to sort out.

Hope this helps and best of luck - keep us updated
