Size
and Stature - The Pug can
grow up to about 30 cm (12 inches) and weigh anywhere from 7 up to 8 kg
(sixteen - seventeen pounds). The build of this breed is short and
stout - quite sturdy on their four short legs. The back and shoulders
are relatively muscular and the head has a short and wrinkled muzzle.
The Pug is also know to suffer from swallowing and breathing problems
which can lead to snoring and even cause your dog to snort.
Grooming
- The coat is very short so is very easy to groom and maintain. Brush
your dog fairly regularly, brush your dog's teeth and keep the nails
clipped. One of the easiest dogs to keep groomed.
Coat
- The coat is very dense but also very soft. The color of the coat can
vary but it will normally appear beige, silver/grey or a
white/yellowish color. The muzzle is always a black color.
Character
and Temperament - This breed
is very popular mainly because of it's balanced and even temperament.
They are very loyal, relatively easy to train, good with children,
sensitive and quite intelligent.
Living
Quarters - This breed can
live quite happily in a Flat or Apartment but they need to be kept
stimulated with lots of attention, play-time and a good collection of
safe toys. Regular exercise is important but obviously due to their
small size overly long walks are not needed.
The
Chihuahua Pug Mix...
Fact File...
- The Chihuahua Pug mix
can develop all of the above characteristics - it just depends on the
gene pool and which breed the offspring has inherited more genes from
(this can obviously vary from dog to dog.
- The Chug is also
sometimes referred to as a Pughuahua but this term is less common.
- The Chug has a good
temperament and is not particular prone to any severe behavior problems.
- The Chihuahua Pug mix
is not particularly
keen on cold weather (this is a common trait in Chihuahuas too).
- The Chug is considered
a trustworthy dog to have around children but as with all dogs - any
interactions between dogs and children should be well supervised - not
only to keep the child safe but to stop the dog from being injured if
mishandled.
- The Chug is considered
very friendly, intelligent and is not prone to excessive barking or
yapping.
- This mixed breed is
considered quite an easy dog to train if a consistent obedience
training program is followed.
- The size and stature
of the Chug is normally more similar to the Pug i.e. quite short and
solid - the average wight of a Chug is 20 pounds (this weight is more
similar to the Pug than the smaller Chihuahua.
- The muzzle is normally
slightly longer that the short snout like muzzle of the Pug (taking
this characteristic from the Chihuahua gene pool) and the tail is curly
similar to the Pug.
- The colors of the Chug
can vary widely from dog to dog taking colors from both breeds.
- The Pug is considered
a relatively stubborn breed - however the Chihuahua is keen to learn
and eager to please when obedience training - consequently this mix has
produced the best of both worlds - an easy dog to train.
- The coat can shed but
is not considered overly problematic. Grooming is quite easy due to the
short coat and brush on a fairly regular basis is sufficient for this
mixed breed. Nail clipping and teeth cleaning should also be done by
either you or a professional.
- This mixed breed can
develop breathing problems (inherited from the Pug gene pool) so this
will need to be considered before you purchase your dog and take him
home.
