What Causes Constipation in Dogs...?
- One of the main causes
of canine constipation is when your dog has been licking his fur
excessively. By licking and then swallowing the fur, this will then
cause a fur ball similar to the ones that cause the same problem in
cats. This fur ball will then block the colon which will then cause
problems going to the toilet.
- Sometime as dogs get
older their prostate gland becomes enlarged and this may also cause
your dog to be constipated, if he is getting on in years. Sometimes
the best cure for this problem is to actually remove the prostate gland.
- Sometimes after
surgery your dog may become constipated, don't panic it shouldn't take
long for your dog to be able to go to the toilet again, if you are
worried take your dog back to the vet.
- Sometimes medication
can cause constipation in dogs. If you are worried that your dog is
having real problems going to the toilet speak to your vet as they may
be able to prescribe some stool softeners to relieve the problem.
- It is not uncommon for
dogs to swallow rocks, pebbles, stones, small toys or fabrics. These
will of course cause major problems as they may not be able to pass
through your dog's intestine and you may need to take your dog to the
vet to get the foreign objects removed.
- A lack of exercise can
also cause constipation problems, daily exercise for your dog or puppy
is very important.
- Raw hide bones come
sometimes cause blockages in the intestine which will again be an issue
when your dog wants to go to the toilet.
- Worms are also a cause
of constipation in dogs and this can be a very severe problem for your
dog or puppy. The worms can enter your dog in a variety of
ways.
- By entering your dog's
body the worms basically start sharing what your dog eats which will
steal the nutrients that are supposed to be for your dog. The worms
will then continue to multiply which will start to block your dog's
intestines with all kinds of nasty garbage causing problems when your
dog wants to poop.
