How to Train a Puppy
Puppy Training Basics
|
When
I first became interested in dog and puppy obedience training I started
by watching puppies interacting with each other.
By
doing this it made it much easier for me to learn how to train a puppy
faster, because I started
to understand puppy behavior and their individual characters.
When
you first bring your puppy home and hold and cuddle him you need to
realize that yes you can have all the fun and games and all the
wonderful play time but it's vitally important to start the training
process early - as soon as possible.
This
will ultimately bring you both closer and avoid any behavior
problems later in life.

How to Train a Puppy - Starting Early
When you are working, playing or anything with your puppy it's
important to realize that you are teaching him something with every gesture, hand signal or verbal command.
I have spoken to new
owners of puppies and they could not believe the amount of
work training a puppy could be.
They hadn't envisaged the pooping, chewing
and other puppy
house training problems that are normally associated with the
purchase of a new puppy.
Once your puppy is fully grown it may become harder to
get fast training results - so start
early.
- It is possible to train a puppy if they have picked
up bad
habits - but it may take a little longer. Puppy
potty training should also be started from an early age before bad habits take route.
- Many
things are learnt as a child and this is the same with a puppy - from
the age of 5-7 weeks - a puppy learns many of it's social skills that
help it to interact in a positive way with humans
and other dogs
in
later life.
- A puppy wants to learn
but as with children allow time for breaks and play-time - this will
help establish a routine.
|
How to Train a Puppy - Establishing a Routine.
|
In
the first few days of owning a puppy it's important that you don't put
too much pressure on him. With any young animal a puppy needs time to
relax in peace and quiet and get used to his new environment.
However,
it is still
important to establish a puppy
obedience training routine
where you balance play-time with exposing your puppy to new and varied
situations.
|
How to Train a Puppy - Puppy Socialization.

Start socializing your puppy early.
Be cautious but not over cautious - find the right balance when it come to exposing your puppy to new situations.
- Introduce your puppy to children and people of different ages and gender and other dogs - if your puppy associates pleasant experiences early on with different situations - this will only help in his adult behavior.
- Go to a busy street away from the House where you can expose your puppy to Cars, Motorbikes, lamp posts and different road surfaces.
- Get your puppy used to lifts, stairs anywhere that isn't too stressful but teaches your puppy.
- Introduce your puppy to crate training, leash training and more advanced obedience training as soon as you have mastered some of the previous training techniques.
How to Train a Puppy
Patience, Consistancy and Persistance
|
There
are varying arguments as to how much you can train a puppy in the first
few months of their life as each puppy has different learning needs and
develop at different speeds - so it is important to take this into
account when you are training your puppy.
You
should not expect a puppy of six months old to know its name, the stay
command, come command or be able to walk on a lead.
- It doesn't really
matter what gestures or verbal commands that you use to teach your
puppy - but you need to use the same commands every-time this will stop
your puppy from getting confused.
- Keep training sessions
short and fun - use reward based methods known as positive
reinforcement as this really works.
- Never ever use any
physical or unnecessary force - this will raise your puppy into an
aggressive dog.
When
puppy obedience training it's best to use a large enclosed room away
from any distractions - such as children, noise and passing cars.

How to Train a Puppy - Supervision
You
are in charge - so get the environment right - this will tell your puppy who's in charge and set the right tone.
You don't want him to
have the chance to practice naughty behavior.
If your puppy never has the chance to eliminate
inside
you are creating a positive and consistent
education environment.
You have created the environment so it's up to you to
make sure that he never has the chance to poop indoors.
To
prevent
accidents - you need to watch
your puppy like a hawk. If you
have a toy breed it won't take a second for him to pee - so I mean it
watch him like a hawk.
For every accident that your puppy has
inside he is practicing behavior that YOU
don't want - and you are both
taking a step backwards.
Even a few seconds without could
set back the puppy
obedience training process- I know it sounds daunting but it will
work.
Once you have created your environment, it will become a
habit for you to watch your puppy
and manage the environment remember
you will be learning this routine together!
