Mange on Dogs

what does scabies look like


Canine mange on dogs comes in three types...
  1. Demodectic .
  2. Cheyletiella
  3. Sarcoptic also known as scabies which can be seen in humans.
Scabies or sarcoptic mange is considered the most severe type and is caused by the parasite mite Sarcoptes Scabiei, we will go into more detail later...but lets start with demodectic...


Demodectic.


This variety is also known as red mange...

Cause.
  • This variety is caused by the parasitic demodex canis mite.
  • Can effect dogs and puppies 3-12 months+
Symptoms.
  • Circular patches that look like ringworm may appear.
  • Inflammation of the skin.
  • Extreme itching.
  • Skin will thicken.
  • Your dog will lose his hair.
  • Skin may appear red and scaly.
  • Legs, face and neck are most commonly effected.
Treatment.

Treatment for the demdectic variety can include...
  • Your dog may need to be dipped in mitaban which is an insecticide.
  • Your dog will need to be clipped.
  • Your dog will also need to be washed with benzoyl peroxide shampoo.

Sarcoptic

Also known as scabies.
Cause.
  • This is caused by the sarcoptes scabiei.
  • The mite is microscopic.
  • This variety is extremely contagious and can be seen in humans.
Symptoms.
  • Extreme itching.
  • Hair loss.
  • The skin may appear crusty.
  • The dog's abdomen, chest, ears and front legs are them most effected areas.
Treatment.
  • Your dog will need a four weekly course of ivermectin injections.

Cheyletiella.


Cause.
  • This is caused by the reasonably large red parasitic mite.
Symptoms.
  • Effects dogs and puppies.
  • It is also called walking dandruff.
  • Your dog will have extreme dandruff over his head, back and neck.

Treatment.
  • Your dog will also need to be dipped in insecticide.
