Puppy training pads have become quite a popular method of house training a puppy - mainly due to how easy they are to use.

However, some dog trainers really do have a grudge against using this training method, mainly due to the fact that they argue - if you are training your puppy to toilet inside the House, how can you reprimand your puppy when he gets confused and pees in the wrong place?
We don't offer a particular option on training pads but we will use this page to train you how best to use them and how to get the most effective results.

What are Puppy Training Pads?


The pads are used by dog owners and trainers to toilet train a puppy or dog.

Each training pad has been treated with a hormone/chemical that stimulates a puppy's bladder and makes them want to potty.

The idea behind this technique is that rather than using paper a pad is cleaner and encourages your puppy to continue to pee in the same place.

After your puppy is regularly using them you should start moving them closer to the door until the pads are completely outside.

It is important when you are housebreaking your puppy that you learn to be realistic and expect that some accidents will happen.

Never reprimand your puppy ten minutes after the actual act.

You need to always be fair and consistent so that your puppy learns to respect you as the pack leader - this way your relationship and bond will strengthen and you will ultimately get better and faster results.

  1. It's always a good idea to use a crate when training a puppy.

    This way you can keep him under strict supervision so that you will be able to spot and emerging behavior problems and it will also stop your puppy having accidents all over the House.

  2. Purchase some training pads from your local pet store and choose ones that have come recommended.

    It's better to spend a little bit more and get some that won't fall apart as soon as your puppy poops on them.

  3. Choose an area in the House where you will place the pad and show them to your puppy - if your dog doesn't know where they are how can you expect him to know where to potty.

  4. If you have a young puppy it is always a good idea to use a toileting timetable - we have provided one below.
Toileting Timetable.
This is a toileting timetable for a 5 month old puppy assuming that you have gone out and have asked a friend or neighbor to pop in and let your puppy out.
  1. 7:30 a.m - Time to let your puppy out for a potty break.

  2. 7:40 a.m. - Time to feed him breakfast

  3. 7:50 a.m. - Time for another potty break - put puppy back in the crate.

  4. 8:30 a.m. - Now you go to work

  5. 12:30 p.m. - Time for your neighbor to give your puppy a potty break

  6. 12:40 p.m. - Neighbor feeds your puppy a meal

  7. 12:45 p.m. - Time for another potty break and then back in his crate.

  8. 5:30 p.m. - You get back from work - time for another potty break

  9. 6:30 p.m. - Time for another potty break

  10. 7:30 p.m. - Time to feed your puppy his dinner

  11. 7:40 p.m. - Time for another potty break

  12. 9:00 p.m - Time for another potty break

  13. 10:00 p.m. - Last potty break and then place in crate for the night.

  1. Every-time that you decide to potty your puppy you should place him on the training pads and repeat the 'Go Potty' cue.

  2. If you see your puppy doing his pre-potty dance i.e. sniffing the ground or going around in a circle - pick him up and place him on the pad.

  3. Every-time that your puppy uses the pads successfully make sure that you give him a treat and lots of praise.

  4. When he is using the pads on a regular basis start moving them closer to the door. Keep moving them closer to the door until they are actually outside.
