Scabies Causes

scabies causes

  • Scabies is also known as Sarcoptic mange, another form of mange on dogs is demodectic mange.
  • Dog scabies is caused by dog mites known as Sarcoptes Scabiei.
  • This parasitic mite will burrow under the skin and will lay eggs beneath the surface in the tunnel.
  • This mite will cause an allergic reaction in your dog which will lead to itching, with serum (the clear substance in blood) often oozing from the tunnels that have been burrowed by the mites.
  • This serum will ooze to the skin's surface causing thick scabs on your canine.
  • Scabies is very contagious and can be passed from animals and dogs to humans.
  • Sometimes scabies can be misdiagnosed as it maybe considered allergic dermatitis.

scabies causes

As mentioned before scabies causes are due to the Sarcoptes Scabiei mite - the mite life cycle involves the following stages...
  • The adult mites - females and males start on the skin's surface, mate and feed on live tissue and cells.
  • The male mite will die soon after mating.
  • The female will then burrow into the skin creating a tunnel, they will then lay their eggs in the tunnel and then die.
  • The eggs are white or cream in color. The eggs will then hatch into larvae after 3-10 days.
  • The larvae will move and live on the skin surface feeding on live cells and fluid, they will then moult into nymphs.
  • The mite will become an adult after 2 weeks.
  • The adult dog mites will live on your dog's skin for about 4 weeks.
We hope you found our introduction to sarcoptic mange useful, and remember to always get advice from your vet or Doctor if you feel you or your dog have caught the disease
