Causes
- Sarcoptic mange in
dogs and humans is a very distressing and debilitating skin infection
that has very aggressive symptoms.
- Dogs may catch scabies
which is also known as Sarcoptic Mange from other animals, another dog,
cat or from the outside environment.
- Sarcoptic mange is
caused by dog mites known as Sarcoptes Scabiei.
- The word mange
actually comes from the French 'mangene' which translates to mean
itching.
- The mites have claw
like hooks also known as suctorial cups - these hook like claws allow
the mites to cling and attach themselves to their host.
- The female mites
burrow into the host's skin leaving tunnels behind, which they leave
their eggs.
- The disease is
extremely contagious and can be passed from animals and dogs to humans.
Symptoms
- As you can see from
the pictures, scabies symptoms are extremely distressing.
- The tunnels that have
been left behind by the female will start to ooze serum (which is the
clear component of blood). The serum rises to the skin's surface
causing thick scabs and crusty skin.
- The scabies mites tend
to concentrate around the face and head but they can appear anywhere on
you or your dog.
Here are some scabies symptoms...
- Frantic itching
- Hair
loss - during the beginning stages patches of hair will fall out around
the elbows, ears, legs and then face.
- Hair
loss - during the later stages patches of hair will fall out all over
the body.
- Listlessness
- Crusty skin
- Thick scabs will form
- Flaky skin
- Inflammation - skin
will appear red
