Differential reinforcement
by: Anonymous

All the puppy will learn is to avoid being picked up by you as soon as you say "no". Then you have a great game of "chase" happening.

If puppy bites feet stop. Do nothing. When puppy looks at you for a reaction, say "yes" (it is always nice to be positive rather than nag all the time) and give a treat.

This is differential reinforcement of another behaviour. The dog is NOT biting feet so you are payng for the behaviour you want. Time out in a crate only devalues the crate. What happens when you want to use the crate as a place to go for safety or a bit of quiet time yourself? The crate should always be a happy place, not a punishment.

Take a look at Differential Reinforcement - it will provide you with a lot more options
