Ticks are a parasite that has no wings and sucks the blood of other mammals like birds, hedgehogs, cattle anything really that brushes against it or makes contact.

There are over 1000 different species of ticks and in two categories called the soft and hard shell.

• The hard shell variety are also known as Ixodidae and have a hard shell - not surprisingly.

• The American dog tick is the most well known variety which lives in North America but is also found across the whole of East America.

• The brown tick also has a hard shell and is known by its scientific name Rhipicephalus sanguineus, and is a big threat to dogs in kennels in any area of the US.

• The hard shell variety will embed itself under the skin of it's host and will have approximately three hosts during th course of its life cycle.

• The life cycle of the hard shell tick goes through larvae, nymph and then adult, but it may only have 1 life cycle or stage in it's life depending on the species.

• Hard shell ticks often lay many thousands of eggs and can live through extreme starvation for many years.
